Former Indian fly-half Virender Sehwag made a big revelation that he wanted to retire from One Day International (ODI) cricket during the Australian tour in 2008 after skipper MS Dhoni decided to drop him from the squad.
During the Commonwealth Bank tri-series featuring Australia, India and in Sri Lanka, the Indian national cricket team played 10 matches and Sehwag only played 5 matches due to poor performance. In the first 4 games he recorded the scores of 6, 33, 11 and 14, as a result, he was dropped from the playing XI.
However, he had an opportunity again in the game against Australia where he only scored 14 points and was waived again.
Meanwhile, India beat Australia 2-0 in the best of three finals of this Commonwealth Bank series.
I thought I will continue to play test cricket only; Sachin Tendulkar Arrested Me – Virender Sehwag
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Sehwag said he considered retiring from ODI after being dropped from the MS Dhoni-led side. However, legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar stopped him from leaving ODI cricket.
“In 2008, while we were in Australia, this question (of retirement) came to mind. I made a comeback in the Test series, I scored 150. In the ODIs, I couldn’t score that much in three-four attempts. So MS Dhoni dropped me from the playing eleven and then the thought of quitting ODI cricket came to my mind. I thought I would continue to play test cricket only,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz’s “Match Party” show.
“Sachin Tendulkar stopped me at that time. He said “this is a bad phase in your life”. Wait, go home after this tour, think it over and then decide what to do”. Luckily, I didn’t announce my retirement at that time,” he said.
Notably, this story was shared by Sehwag when during a chat he was asked if Virat Kohli should consider taking a break from cricket.
Sehwag also said that Kohli, who has struggled with running lately, loves a challenge and he is proving his doubters wrong by scoring points for his team.
“There are two types of players – Those who like challenges, they have fun in such situations and Virat is one of them. He listens to all the criticism and reacts on the pitch by scoring points to prove them wrong. L he other type are the ones who aren’t affected by all the noise because at the end of the day they know what they have to do. I was that kind of player. I didn’t care who criticized me. I wanted to play, score points and go home,” added Sehwag.
