The Super Bowl 2023 turned out to be a real feast for U2 fans after a trailer was played at the State Farm Stadium in Arizona. In the trailer, fans could witness an “unidentified flying object” with a large silver sphere floating through the air. Well, U2 has declared that they’re about to invade fans with an upcoming Las Vegas residency.
The famous Irish rock band confirmed via the Super Bowl trailer that they will be taking up residency in the recently opened MSG Sphere in LA for an immersive show. The residency, dubbed “U2:UV Achtung Baby Live At The Sphere,” will celebrate the band’s darker, post-Joshua Tree turn, which led to the 1991 album Achtung Baby. The band is all geared up to dazzle fans with hits like “The Fly”, “One” and “Mysterious Ways”.
More About U2’s LA Residency…
Wondering what the dates are? While more details are yet to be released, the
“U2:UV Achtung Baby Live” at The Sphere will kick off in the autumn of 2023. The confirmation about their LA Residency shows comes just ahead of the rock band’s “Song of Surrender”, a collection of 40 songs from their back catalogue, which is going to be released on Friday (Feb. 17).
As for the venue, the brand new MSG Sphere is a $2.2 billion masterpiece, billed as the largest sphere in the world. It has a 160,000-square-foot wraparound display plane, which is the highest-resolution LED screen in the world. Perfect for a band like U2, isn’t it? The band’s lead artist, Bono, who is busy promoting his memoir, Surrender, expressed about the residency, “It’s nothing like Las Vegas has ever seen before. I’m interested in Las Vegas for all kinds of reasons, even going back to ‘The Fly.’”
FYI, the band would be performing with drummer Larry Mullens JR. as he is due to undergo surgery and subsequent rehabilitation. “It’s going to take all we’ve got to approach the Sphere without our bandmate in the drum seat, but Larry has joined us in welcoming Bram van den Berg, who is a force in his own right,” U2 revealed in a statement.
Bono, who hasn’t played live since December 2019, further revealed that the Sphere show has been in the works for a long time. “We don’t want to let people down, least of all our audience… the truth is we miss them as much as they appear to miss us… our audience was always the fifth member of the band.”
He revealed that they’re the “right band, ACHTUNG BABY the right album, and the Sphere the right venue” to take the live experience of music to the next level. And, why not? This is what U2 has been trying to do all along with their satellite stages and video installations. You can register for Ticketmaster Verified Access here.
