The man who killed Nicki Minaj’s father in a hit-and-run accident has been sentenced to one year in prison. The rapper’s father, Robert Maraj, died last year in February following the accident.
Apart from his time his prison, the 70-year-old convict named Charles Polevich will have to pay a fine of $5000, and his driver’s license has been suspended for six months. Read on to know more about the unfortunate event of Robert’s death.
Nicki’s Father Died After Being Hit by a Car Last Year
In February 2021, Robert was hit by a car while he was walking on a road in Long Island. He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries and passed away the next day. He was 64 years old.
During the investigation, Police officers tracked the car down to Polevich’s home using various videos. Polevich was accused of covering up the car in his garage and doing things to alter the evidence.
At the time, Police had told about the convict, “He was absolutely aware of what happened. He got out of the car, and he looked at the deceased, got into his car, and made the conscious decision to leave instead of dialing 911, instead of calling an ambulance for the man. He went home and secluded the vehicle. He’s well aware of what he did.”
Polevich later turned himself in over the accident and pleaded guilty to two felony charges – leaving the scene of an auto accident with a fatality and tampering with evidence.
The Convict was Facing over 7 Years in Prison
Minaj’s mom, Carol Maraj, had filed a $150 million civil lawsuit against Polevich in March last year over the accident that killed her husband. She had accused him of being negligent, reckless, and careless for hitting Robert with his car while driving.
Polevich, however, at the time denied any wrongdoing and blamed Robert for his death. His attorney said that Robert acted ‘reckless, careless and negligent in crossing the street,’ which led to the accident.
Polevich, who has no previous criminal records, pleaded guilty to felony charges in May this year. He was facing up to seven years in prison; however, Judge Howard Sturim decided to sentence him to no more than one year in jail.
Nicki called her Father’s Death ‘The Most Devastating Moment in Life’
The 39 year old rapper had opened up about her loss in May last year on her website. She wrote, “Tho I can’t really bring myself to discuss the passing of my father as yet; I can say it has been the most devastating loss of my life.”
The Bang Bang singer further added that she still felt like calling him all the time. She said, “I find myself wanting to call him all the time. More so now that he’s gone. Life is funny that way. May his soul rest in paradise. He was very loved & will be very missed.”
