Almost two weeks after the conclusion of You season 4, Netflix has renewed the psychological thriller for a fifth and final season. On Friday, the streaming platform and the show’s creators announced the renewal and confirmed that the series would end after the upcoming season.
You, which follows the story of a serial stalker Joe Goldberg, has proved to be a huge success for Netflix, garnering massive viewership in all of its seasons till now. The streaming giant also announced that showrunner Sera Gamble would be exiting the show and will be replaced by executive producers Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo.
You Renewed for Fifth and Final Season by Netflix
Announcing the development, Peter Friedlander, vice president of scripted series for Netflix US and Canada, said, “You became an instant sensation on Netflix with a resounding cultural impact that has grown season over season. We’re excited, and a bit terrified, to see how it all ends for Joe Goldberg, but one thing is for sure: ‘You’ are in for an unforgettable ending.”
Details on the final season, including the production date and cast, have been kept under wraps. Foley and Lo, who have been promoted to showrunners, also released a statement: “Working with Greg and Sera on ‘You’ has been a highlight of our careers, and we’re incredibly honored to be entrusted with the final chapter of Joe Goldberg’s story.”
Sera Gamble to Exit as Showrunner in the Final Season
Gamble developed the series along with Greg Berlanti and worked on four seasons of the series. The writer has now revealed that she is leaving the show to work on new projects. “Making the show alongside our writers, producers, directors, cast and crew has been an honor and ridiculously fun,” Gamble said in a statement.
“And I feel lucky to have worked with an artist as gifted and thoughtful as Penn Badgley. I’m proud of what we’ve all accomplished and feel privileged to pass the torch. I’m excited to watch and support the ‘You’ team as they bring Joe Goldberg’s journey to its delightfully twisted conclusion,” she continued.
Greg Berlanti and executive producer Sarah Schechter added, “We are so incredibly grateful to Netflix and Sera and everyone that has been a part of this show from the beginning. Sera is the most brilliant writer and partner and she will remain a key part of the ‘You’ family as an executive producer.”
Penn Badgley Teases What to Expect from the Final Season
While the plot for the fifth season has not been revealed yet, the show’s lead Penn Badgley opened up about how the story will conclude in a separate interview. “I feel like it’s building towards a greater resolution. That’s what I want for Joe … because now, the circumstances are actually different. He has a level of power and wealth that he’s never had,” he said.
“With Love, he technically had wealth, and he was adjacent to some power, but he hated it, and he didn’t take it for his own,” he continued. “Whereas now, he seems to be embracing it and taking it for his own. And to be honest, that’s sort of terrifying prospect,” the actor added.
