Rachel Roy, an American fashion designer, is a UN Women global advocate for the empowerment of women and girls in STEM fields and business.
She was born in Monterey, CA on 15 January 1974, but spent much of her childhood in Seaside. Siblings Rajendra Roy, Chief Film Curator at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, and her grew up together.
Rachel Roy was raised as a Seventh-day Adventist by her Dutch mother and Madras’ father.
She began her career in the fashion industry at the age of fourteen, when she began working at a clothes store called Contempo Casuals.
A Seaside High School alum, Roy has now completed his education. She studied fashion at Washington Adventist University and then found work as a stylist in New York.

She met her future husband, Damon Dash while working as an intern at the urban fashion label Rocawear, where she eventually became the creative director of the women’s and children’s divisions. In 2004, she debuted her first clothing line.
For her work in the American fashion industry, Roy was honored in 2006 with a Bollywood industry award.
She joined the CFDA in 2007, went into business with Jones Apparel Group in June 2008, and debuted her own line of reasonably priced sportswear, shoes, and accessories, The Rachel Roy collection, in 2009.
The RACHEL Rachel Roy line may be found in Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Shoewoo, and Nordstrom, to name a few.
When Teen Vogue asked Roy to help them turn a T-shirt into a prom dress for their April 2009 issue, she became a household name among young women everywhere. Later that summer, Roy began working on a jewelry collection with British pop artist Estelle.
Together with model Jessica Stam, Roy created a small capsule collection for Macy’s and RachelRoy.com in the fall of 2010.
In 2018, Roy was also awarded a UN Women Champion for Innovation in addition to receiving the Bollywood Industry Award and the ACE Award.
As a result of her work with the United Nations, she received recognition for her advocacy of gender equality. Roy co-wrote her first book, “Design Your Life: 96 Words for Love,” with her daughter Ava in 2015. It came out in the year 2019.
Roy is also an advisor for the national charity World of Children, whose mission is to help the world’s most disadvantaged children.
The Jones Apparel Group sadly chose to sell and liquidate the Rachel Roy Brand in 2013. Roy’s trademarks were another item the Jones Group planned to unload. Defiant, Roy filed a lawsuit against Jones Apparel.
The judge agreed with Roy, finding that she had complete editorial control over her business and the right to choose who would purchase it. Sycamore Partners acquired the business after a lawsuit against them was resolved. Her fashion business is now run in cooperation with Topson Downs, and Roy owns half of the business.

In 2005, Roy wed Damon Dash. Both Ava Dash born in December 1999 and Tallulah Dash born in 2000 is their children b. May 2008.
In 2009, Rachel filed for divorce from her husband; in April 2015, she was granted full custody of their two children.
She additionally sought and received a three-year restraining order against Dash for herself and her two girls. A few days later, Dash sued her for violation of fiduciary responsibilities and won.
