Eurovision Song Contest 2023 Hosts Announced

February 23, 2023 by Bunny Baba

The hosts for the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest have been announced. The BBC, which is the official broadcaster for this year’s event, has confirmed that Emmy Award-winning actress Hannah Waddingham will be presenting the contest along with British singer Alesha Dixon and Ukrainian singer Julia Sanina.

The ladies will be hosting the semi-finals and will be accompanied by Graham Norton to host the grand final. The Eurovision Song Contest is scheduled to take place from May 9 to May 13 in Liverpool, United Kingdom.

Eurovision 2023 Hosts Announced

Waddingham is known for her roles in hit shows and films like Ted Lasso, Game of Thrones, Sex Education, and Willow. Expressing her excitement on being announced as the host, the actress said, “There’s something really special about Eurovision.”

“It’s one of the world’s greatest music festivals, but this year, perhaps more than ever, it is such a great honour to be standing shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine, a country which has carried itself with such strength and unity. It is my great privilege to join Eurovision this year of all years,” she added.

Britain’s Got Talent judge and singer Alesha Dixon also released a statement: “There is just something about the buzz and anticipation of a live show that can’t be rivalled. Eurovision delivers that excitement, creativity, and talent, but on a vast, global scale”.

Julia Sanina, the frontwoman of Ukrainian alternative band The Hardkiss, added, “I’m so excited to showcase Ukrainian culture and creativity, and to help put on a show to make my country proud. I can’t wait to get to Liverpool and meet the fans and the rest of the Eurovision family.”

Graham Norton will Join the Trio in the Grand Final

Norton, who has served as a commentator on the contest since 2009, will be hosting the grand final with Waddingham, Dixon, and Sanina. “Every year that I’m involved, it’s a huge honor. This year is even more special, and I personally feel a big responsibility to make our Ukrainian colleagues proud.” the 59 year old presenter said.

Actress Mel Giedroyc will be the co-commentator this year. I’ve been a fan of Eurovision since I was knee-high to Lulu, and we are all in for a real treat come May. I’m looking forward to taking one of the best seats in the house and bringing the Eurovision banter with Mr. Norton to those watching from their Eurovision parties in the UK,” said Giedroyc.

The UK is Organizing the Song Contest on Behalf of Ukraine

Ukraine was initially chosen as the host country for Eurovision 2023, but due to Russia’s invasion, the plan could not materialize. The UK then stepped up to host the event on behalf of the war-torn country, and the BBC was selected as the official broadcaster replacing Ukraine’s UA:PBC.

This year’s event will see participation by 37 broadcasters. The semi-finals are set to take place on May 9 and 11, with the grand final scheduled on May 13. Tickets for the contest, including nine separate shows and rehearsals, will go on sale in the upcoming weeks.
