What Are Ovarian Cysts?
Cysts in the ovaries are fluid-filled sacs that develop in the ovaries due to hormonal changes. This common type of growth grows on your ovaries or interior. Cysts can be classified into several types based on their appearance. In the majority of cases, these types of growths are harmless, do not cause symptoms, and eventually go away on their own.
There is a possibility that cysts can cause complications that require the attention of your healthcare provider in some cases. To prevent problems with cysts from developing in the future, it is a good idea to have routine pelvic exams performed every few years.
It is known that symptomatic ovarian cysts may cause symptoms such as bloating, pressure, or pain near the location of the cyst, and in some cases, can even grow to be the size of a grapefruit or as large as several pounds, depending on the severity of the cyst. It is estimated that 5% to 10% of all women have ovarian cysts removed through surgery, according to the National Institutes of Health.
