Alec Baldwin and producers of the film Rust have finally reached a settlement with the family of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was killed after Baldwin accidentally fired a prop gun toward her during the rehearsal of a scene.
All the involved parties have settled the case for an undisclosed amount in court. The filming of Rust will now resume in January next year, with Halyna’s husband, Matthew Hutchins, being on board as executive producer. All of the original cast will be returning for the filming.
Halyna’s Family Drops Lawsuit Against ‘Rust’ Producers and Baldwin
Matthew Hutchins has said that their family has decided to drop the wrongful death lawsuit filed against producers of Rust and actor Alec Baldwin. All the parties now agree that Halyna’s death was an accident.
“We have reached a settlement, subject to court approval, for our wrongful death case against the producers of Rust, including Alec Baldwin and Rust Movie Productions, LLC. As part of that settlement, our case will be dismissed. The filming of Rust, which I will now executive produce, will resume with all the original principal players on board in January 2023,” said Matthew in a statement.
“I have no interest in engaging in recriminations or attribution of blame (to the producers or Mr. Baldwin). All of us believe Halyna’s death was a terrible accident. I am grateful that the producers and the entertainment community have come together to pay tribute to Halyna’s final work,” he added.
Director Joel Souza, who was Injured in the Shooting, will also Return to the Film
Film director Joel Souza, who was aslo struck by the live ammunition, and survived the accident, will be returning to direct the film. Following the settlement, he released a statement saying he will honor Halyna’s legacy with the film.
“In my own attempts to heal, any decision to return to finish directing the film could only make sense for me if it was done with the involvement of Matt and the Hutchins family. Though certainly bittersweet, I am pleased that together, we will now complete what Halyna and I started,” said Joel.
While Baldwin has not yet commented on the settlement, his attorney did release a statement quoting, “Throughout this difficult process, everyone has maintained the specific desire to do what is best for Halyna’s son. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to the resolution of this tragic and painful situation.”
Halyna Hutchins was Killed in October Last Year
Hutchins was killed during the filming of Rust in New Mexico in October last year, when Alec was rehearsing a scene with a prop gun, which discharged suddenly. Baldwin maintained that he was told the gun was ‘cold’, which means safe and without ammunition, and that he did not pull the trigger.
Hutchins’ family then filed a lawsuit against the actor and producers, alleging that their cost-cutting techniques and unsafe procedures led to her death. Authorities in New Mexico have not yet filed criminal charges against the crew, but the investigation is reportedly still going on.
