1923 Filming Locations
The Paramount+ show was filmed in 13 different locations, spanning three different continents. The majority of filming took place in Montana and in the continents of Africa and Europe. The cameras started rolling in August 2022, and the shooting concluded a few months later. Here are all the details of the locations where 1923 was shot:
Montana
Much like Yellowstone, the major portion of 1923 was also filmed in Montana. A total of nine cities and towns in the state served as the shooting locations for the show, including Butte, Pony, Anaconda, Valier, Whitehall, Dillon, Hamilton, Park City, and Deer Lodge.
The sequences of the Dutton Ranch, Catholic boarding school, and local pastures and wilderness were taped in Montana. Many important scenes were filmed in the Uptown Butte area, where the cast and crew rented the Butte Civic Center at Harrison Avenue.
Many buildings in the town were converted to sets for the show. The Silver House at 106 West Broadway Street was utilized as the Election Headquarters, the Kenwood building was turned into Hotel Bozeman, and the Piccadilly Museum of Transportation was transformed into an Auto Dealer shop.
The cast and crew were also spotted filming at the KMBF Radio Station headquarters, Excelsior Avenue, Park Street, Butte-Silver Bow Courthouse, Hamilton Street, and Montana Street. In addition, the production team was seen working in the city of Anaconda in August and in the town of Whitehall in September 2022.
Tanzania, Africa
Some scenes of the series were also filmed in the country of Tanzania, situated in East Africa. The location was primarily used to show Spencer Dutton working as a guide and hunter in Namibia. Tanzania is known for its dense forests and high mountain ranges. The country is a host to a number of national parks.
Cape Town, South Africa
In November 2022, the cast and crew of 1923 were seen in Cape Town, the second-largest city and the legislative capital of South Africa. The production team set up its base in the sports field of Fish Hoek High School. Some sequences were also shot in Kalk Bay, a fishing village and suburb of Cape Town.
Malta, Europe
A few scenes were filmed in Malta, an island country in Southern Europe. The country, which is situated in the Mediterranean Sea, has previously served as a filming location for Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Malta is the tenth-smallest and the fourth-most densely populated country in the world.
